Para "Insectarium": Darwin y los insectos.

"A most paradoxical mixture of sound and silence pervades the shady parts of the wood" escribe Darwin en The Vogage of the Beagle. . ." refiriéndose a la paradoja del sonido y silencio que caracteriza a los sectores más sombríos de la selva en Brasil.  

El sonido de los insectos, dice, es tal que se lo puede oír desde el barco anclado a cientos de metros de la costa. 

Sin embargo, se sorprende, en el interior de la selva parece reinar un silencio universal: 

"The noise from the insects is so loud, that it may be heard even in a vessel anchored several hundred yards from the shore; yet within the recesses of the forest a universal silence appears to reign."

Puede uno imaginar la impresión que este fenómeno le habrá producido a quien se enfrentaba a una naturaleza desbordante. Él mismo observa que decir que es un deleite deambular por primera vez en la selva brasilera no expresa la impresión que se tiene al hacerlo:

"Delight itself, however, is a weak term to express the feelings of a naturalist who, for the first time, has wandered by himself in a Brazilian forest. The elegance of the grasses, the novelty of the parasitical plants, the beauty of the flowers, the glossy green of the foliage, but above all the general luxuriance of the vegetation, filled me with admiration."

Admiración es lo que el observador novato siente frente a tal naturaleza, incluido el poderoso ruido de la infinidad de insectos.
