Solsticio ::: Solstice

Post image for Happy Solstice!

Summer solstice. The sun stops moving. The earth’s axle holds its tilting for an instant, a point of certitude in the vastness of infinity. This we know. Our ancestors knew it also. Night after night they plunged in the marveled astonishment of a sky bright with stars, a sky which today has vanished for most of us. Under the intact night of Antiquity—unpolluted penumbra—the admired onlookers could not close their eyes and sleep without having delirious dreams of fascination. The spirit trembled under so many lights.

Today we admire, without the immediacy of the night spectacle around us, the fantastic vision of the galaxies the new magic instrument gets from the infinite. Incredible show, almost alien to us, as alien as the real world has become, daily reproduced in the screen from the perspective of the testimonial eye—selective, alienating—of the camera lens: faceted universe of the digital image. The mind is wisely surprised and distant.

The axle returns towards the equilibrium of the equinox. The orbs continue their revolving in the secret of their disorder. Or are we to suppose an order—counterpoint of the spheres—in the mystery of chaos, as they preach those who dream of an ideal explanation that answers all questions?
